By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/1999
Sears, Roebuck and Co. was recognized for excellence in quality and technology at the Warehouse of the Future 99 Conference and Exhibition in Orlando on June 8. The award was presented by the Distribution, Business, Management Association (DBM), sponsor of the event. Accepting was Dave Giometti, Vice President, Vendor Relations for Sears. The award recognizes the company's development of a full-service reverse logistics program based around its creation of central return centers (CRCs). Prior to 1994, Sears faced a major challenge in dealing with defective products returned by customers. The situation involved over 800 stores handling hundreds of thousands of items being returned to thousands of vendors. At the time, most defective merchandise was disposed of in a landfill. The solution was creation of the CRCs. The short-term goal was returning defective merchandise to improve product quality.
In accepting the award, Giometti recognized the support of Sears CEO Arthur Martinez and Executive VP of Logistics Gus Pagonis in the decision to centralize the processing of defective merchandise. The program has been expanded to service not only full-line stores, but also dealer and hardware stores, auto centers, and other facilities.
The focus of the 1999 Award was on the retail industry. Some of the nominees included Best Buy, Home Depot, K Mart, Lands' End Inc, Sony Corp., Wal-Mart Stores, Toys R Us, and Tiffany & Co.
Sears was chosen by a panel of international judges from the top universities and associations in distribution, logistics, and supply chain management.
DBM presents this award to one company each year that represents excellence and a strong commitment to the environment.
