The reference for the new millennium
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/15/1999
Technically this is the mid-September 1999 issue of Modern Materials Handling. But as our cover proclaims, it is also the Casebook Directory issue for 2000. We'll stretch the definition of the new millennium a little, and, in keeping with our headline, call this issue the materials handling reference for this new era. At any rate, as always in the past, it is your year-long reference guide to selecting, specifying, and buying materials handling equipment, systems, and services.Of course, the materials handling world has expanded greatly over the years. Today no system is complete without including the information technologies that provide the flow of real-time data that must run parallel to the flow of materials throughout a facility and its supply chain. These information technologies include various types of software (WMS, MES, ERP, etc.) and the automatic data capture devices that provide the input necessary for the software programs to function.
Integrators of materials handling and related information technologies have also become a strong force in the expanded materials handling world. For the last several years, we have included integrators along with traditional manufacturers and distributors as being sources of supply.
Thus, this year's edition is the most updated materials handling reference available. Its organization remains similar to those of the past. The Casebook section, up front, contains numerous case histories of successful materials handling solutions, organized along six major combined categories of equipment and technology. Also included are equipment selection guideline illustrations that depict various categories of equipment and where they are used most efficiently. Source selection tables of suppliers are also included for certain equipment types.
The second half, or directory section of this issue, identifies suppliers and sources for all types of materials handling equipment and related information technologies. The first section lists names, addresses, and contacts for equipment manufacturers as well as suppliers of systems integration services. Following that is the equipment listings section, that permits you to identify suppliers by first going to the type of equipment you are interested in. The next section, on suppliers of systems integration services, contains separate listings by company type and type of service provided. The final part provides an alphabetical listing of distributors arranged by state and city, with a key to the product lines each carries.
