Work assist vehicle facilitates picking

Department 56 faced a problem in its samples area, an 11,000 sq ft storage section. As the ceramic giftware importer/distributor's business has grown, so has the volume of items to be stored at its Eden Prairie, Minn. warehouse."The challenge for us was to squeeze more product into the same space, which left us with only one alternative-to go up," recalls Mike Wasilewski, inspection/returns manager.
Five levels of picking at a 9-ft maximum picking height were expanded to eight levels of picking at a 14-ft maximum picking height. But how would delicate items be picked with an aisle width of just 42 in.?
Wasilewski found a work assist vehicle that allows workers to reach the necessary height, and its use eliminates time spent going up and down ladders.
"The safety aspect also became very evident," Wasilewski recalls. "We looked at it from an insurance standpoint. The cost of one fall from a ladder would probably far exceed the cost of a vehicle. That was the big factor."
"The new vehicle probably allows us to make five times as many picks in the same time, simply by the fact that it allows you to pick, carry, and transport product all on one tool and also at elevated heights," he adds.
