Quiet. That's what Harcourt-a multifaceted publisher of educational and professional books and materials-wanted from its new conveyor system. When company decision makers decided to install a new order fulfillment system in their new state-of-the-art distribution center in Lewisville, Texas, quiet operation was high on their list of priorities.A lineshaft conveyor system was seamlessly integrated with the facility's warehouse management system (WMS) to provide an ultra-quiet operating environment. The system provides the maximum in carton transportation efficiency with a minimum horsepower requirement.
The order fulfillment system consists of a two-level, split-case pick module storage/picking structure.
Its conveyor system includes:
- carton/order induction,
- picking conveyors,
- a value-added services area,
- a QC carton staging area,
- carton fill & seal operations,
- full case induction, and
- a high-capacity, automatic sorting system in the shipping department.
Using non-contact photo-eye sensor control, a multiple-zone carton accumulation conveyor provides maximum speed at reduced noise levels. The system is integrated with bar codes scanners and a WMS running on an AS-400 platform.
For added productivity improvement, the order fulfillment conveyor system also provides Harcourt with automatic product replenishment throughout the two-level split-case pick module. The end result is greatly reduced manpower requirements in the new distribution center. Interlake
