Sara Lee Clothing gets dressed up with wireless system

There's little question that the current trend to smaller, more frequent orders is here to stay. The challenge is for warehouses and distribution centers to find cost effective ways to cope with the increase in order processing tasks each day.At Sara Lee Clothing in Brisbane, Australia, the solution is to put a wireless data communication terminal on mobile carts and team them with a put-to-light system. Put-to-light systems work in reverse of pick-to-light. In a put system, the carts bring inventory to stationary order processing areas and put the items to the appropriate location.
For broken case picks, the radio frequency data communication (RFDC) terminals direct the workers to the put-to-light locations and what items to place where. Up to six orders are filled at a time. Without having to return to a home base, workers receive instructions for their next tasks.
"We're starting to get close to 500 units per person per hour with this system and our accuracy is around 99%," says Jeff Jenkins, manager of strategic planning and development at Sara Lee Clothing. "Our productivity and accuracy have improved substantially and we now have much better control of the total distribution task."
