Linear, 2-D bar codes to co-exist

End users surveyed for a market study suggest that 2-D and conventional bar codes are complementary technologies.

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/1999

Two-dimensional bar codes complement, and won't displace, the more conventional linear bar codes, end users say. In a market study on 2-D symbologies and associated equipment and systems, Venture Development Corp. (VDC) found 87% of those surveyed observing that the 2-D codes will augment linear bar codes. Only 9% think of 2-D codes as a total replacement for the linear codes.

2-D codes do have more of a potential rival in radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, however, and may have to compete against other automatic data capture technologies as well. Sixty-four percent of end users suggested likely competition between 2-D and RFID for the same applications. But only 23% believed there's a rivalry with magnetic stripe technology, and just 7% thought smart cards will challenge 2-D systems.
