A billion pallets here, a billion there ...
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/1/1999
Billions and billions of pallets are used worldwide. In the U.S. alone, there are nearly 2 billion in use, repair, etc. Or there's an estimated seven pallets for every person, as National Wooden Pallet and Container Association president John Healy points out.Hmmmm...Let's do the math, according to a U.S. Forest Service estimate (pie chart). Some 1 billion pallets are in use in the U.S. in any year; some 400 million pallets will be manufactured and added to that total. Meantime, 175 million are in the hands of repair firms for recycling, fixing. Going to landfills will be 225 million pallets, but 35 million pallets of this slice will be recovered. And 100 million pallets will become the net loss.
