Making the leap
Gaining your own competitive edge in 2000--will it take magic?
By Mike Flamer -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2000
Are you equipped with the essential technological knowledge and skills to compete in this ever-evolving high-tech society in which we live? The year 2000 will usher in even more "giant leaps" in advancing technology. The successful practitioner will be the one who prepares for the challenges that he/she will be faced with; many will look to MHMS to help them make that "leap."As I write this article, I am amazed at how fast three years have passed. In just three years as the president of MHMS, and since we became a division of the Material Handling Institute, we have changed dramatically, both in size and in the programs we offer to members of the Society.
We have more than tripled our membership in the past two years and we have set even higher goals for the year 2000.
Our success is due to the vision of our Board of Directors and our commitment to our members and to satisfying their needs. That commitment includes the development of more programs and resources for our members to assist them in their continuing career development. And, keeping in mind the fast paced world in which we live, we will be developing these resources in a format that will make access more convenient (CD-ROM, Web, and the like).
Let me name just a few of the resources that were made available to our members in 1999 in an interactive CD-ROM format:
- "An Introduction to the Economic Justification of Material Handling Investments."
- "A Personal Guide to Automatic Guided Vehicle Systems."
- "Conveyor Sortation: A Multimedia Guide."
- "An Introduction to Basic Material Handling Equipment."
All of these will be beneficial to the participants preparing for our certification program.
And, we introduced and implemented a new level of certification for the materials handling practitioner, the Certified Associate in Materials Handling (CAMH).
I, like you, will be making a transition in 2000 in that I will be stepping down from my role as president of MHMS and moving into the post of past president. However, I will remain committed to you and to our members, and will continue to work on your behalf.
Gaining a competitive edge is not magic. It just requires one step, the step toward membership in MHMS. If you are a member, take advantage of the resources available to you.
If you are not currently a member, join now and get the MHMS advantage!
