A 1999 Deloitte Consulting survey of over 200 global corporations finds
that four out of the top five strategic objectives for e-business revolve around
supply chain and procurement processes. Although e-procurement has only been in
existence for a few years, it's quickly becoming a business standard, says the
survey. Industries with the highest adoption rates of e-procurement systems and
services include high-tech manufacturing, with new growth expected from general
manufacturing. Companies plan to use best-of-breed and enterprise resource
planning (ERP) systems for their e-business procurement solutions. And although
the average company will spend between $2 million and $4 million to implement
e-procurement, the study finds that the return on investment for e-procurement
averages an excess of 300%.
