Forklift misuse earns OSHA fine
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2000
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Papertech Corporation paper mill of New Hampshire, for alleged violations. Fines could reach over $48,000."What we found," says David May OSHA area director for New Hampshire, " were employees being exposed to a variety of workplace hazards ranging from wet and slippery work areas, to unguarded moving machine parts, to the use of unsafe forklift trucks."
The employer had been cited for violations before, therefore many are repeat violations. Four of the alleged repeat violations, which carry total proposed penalties of $40,000, are for allowing the use of a forklift truck with a defective tire and failing to examine all forklift trucks each day before placing them in service. Also a forklift truck which was producing high levels of carbon monoxide in its exhaust was not removed from the facility.
