New container for automotive fasteners
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2000
Consistent parts delivery, elimination of waste, and minimization of systems costs are what prompted the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and the Automotive Industrial Fastener Group (AIFG) to create a standard for returnable and extendible containers used for shipping fasteners. The goal is a standardized system of one returnable container, one expendable container, and one pallet system for both types of containers. Achieving this goal will allow the fastener industry to utilize higher speed automated packaging and palletizing equipment, increasing efficiencies and reducing costs.
As part of the implementation process, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and GM will require all new projects involving fasteners to use the new AIAG fastener box guidelines.
Previously there were 35 container options in use to ship fasteners to automotive customers. Adding to the complexity were associated issues such as weight requirements, cleanliness, container management, and inconsistent container availability.
The new standard, reusable AIAG fastener container will be available early in the first quarter of this year.
