Success stems from communication

Goals this year include keeping you updated on what's happening in MHMS.

By Sal Fateen -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/2000

Communication is the key in the high-tech society in which we live. MHMS realizes that in order to be successful we must utilize communication, in all its forms, to effectively accomplish our goals for 2000.

In this article, my first since election as the new President of MHMS, let me review some of the objectives of MHMS for the coming year. In 2000, MHMS will be placing a higher emphasis on educating and certifying members; on keeping you updated on what's happening in our Society and the industry as a whole; and on making you aware of new resources for the materials handling practitioner.

MHMS has "hit the ground running" since the beginning of this new millennium to accomplish some of these goals.

Effective January 1, 2000, MHMS amended its by-laws to provide for the establishment of councils within the Society. Councils will operate much in much the same way as the current chapters of the Society do; however, they will not be limited to a particular geographical area. The development of more councils and chapters throughout the US and internationally will help us attain our goal of increased membership and provide additional benefits to our members through local activities.

JUSTMAT, which is team centered, user-friendly software for decision support has become available. On an interactive CD-ROM, this software assists the practitioner in capturing the soft benefits of investment alternatives. It uses a structured methodology to rank order and evaluate investment criteria. Using easily understood graphs that help to assess alternatives, the software also recommends a course of action based on direct financial returns (discounted cash flows) and other anticipated outcomes. For more information on this and other resources, call 704-676-1183 and ask for Ali Barker.

If you are not currently a member of MHMS, call us now at 704-676-1183 or visit our web site at www.mhia.org/mhms . If you are a member, we want to hear from you. We need your feedback. What programs or resources would you be interested in? What would benefit you in your continuing professional development?

Yes, it is important for all of us to remember that success stems from communication.
