Benchmarking on the rise
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/2000
Benchmarking, already an activity performed to improve operations at many warehouses, will become a standard warehouse practice during the next several years, says the latest survey conducted by the Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC).Almost two-thirds of the respondents to the survey indicated that their companies currently use benchmarking. Nearly 50% indicated that their firms plan to extend benchmarking activities in the next 2 years.
The top two reasons cited as factors that influence a company's decision to benchmark were for improved quality of operations and increased management controls. Lack of resources, time, and available data are the top three reasons cited as major obstacles to benchmarking.
Copies of the WERCwatch report "Benchmarking warehouse operations," are available to WERC members for $5 and to nonmembers for $10. Call 630-990-0001 or visit www.werc.org .
