GM turns to required 2D bar codes
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/2000
General Motors has adopted a uniform global parts labeling template and has directed its global suppliers to convert by March 31, 2000. The template is based on the PDF-417 two-dimensional bar code. All 25,000 GM's suppliers will have to conform to this label standard when shipping production parts to any of GM's facilities.Called the Symbol PDF-417 uniform global part-labeling template, the idea behind it is to make the label easy to read. The previous label used as many as five or more linear bar codes, limiting space for human readable data. The use of the PDF-417 2D bar code will require only one scan to collect the same information. In addition, the bar code can also be read if it is somewhat damaged.
