Mid-sized businesses had their Web sites recognized with the first ever awards for outstanding Web sites from mid-sized businesses. Co-sponsored by AT&T, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), and RSM McGladrey, the awards recognize outstanding Web sites developed by mid-sized business in the manufacturing, distribution, and financial institutions sectors. Mid-sized businesses were defined as those that earn less than $500 million.National Instruments Corp. (www.natinst.com) of Austin, TX won the award for manufacturers, and VWR Scientific Products (www.vwrsp.com ) of West Chester, PA won the award for distributors.
"The Internet is becoming a mainstream tool of mid-sized organizations," says Robert Larson-Hughes, national managing director of RSM Mcgladrey's e-business service. "We studied thousands of Web sites and a few businesses are leading the way in the middle market."
Judges named 30 finalists out of a total of 2,515 participants based on how well each company's Web site performed in five categories: information, customer service, design, quality, and connectivity. These elements RSM McGladrey established as essential for a site to be considered exemplary.
