PSC consolidates
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2001
To reduce costs and streamline operations, PSC Inc., a supplier of bar code scanning equipment and automatic data capture solutions, is being restructured, resulting in the consolidation of its Webster, N.Y. headquarters with its operations in Oregon.
The service and manufacturing center will be moved to PSC's Eugene, Ore. location and top corporate offices will move to either Eugene or Portland, Ore. The company is also eliminating 140 positions (110 in Webster) during the first quarter of 2001.
Bill Parnell, Jr., executive vice president and chief operating officer at PSC, says that communication across the company was too difficult with groups on both the East and West coasts. "This gets everyone on the same page," he says.
Remaining in Webster for the time being is the PSC Automation, Inc. business unit, which is for sale, and an engineering research group that is working on self-checkout, verification, imaging, and mobile and wireless products.
Parnell says the future of the company is in retail and wireless/distribution markets with associated value-added solutions for both markets.
