Outstanding productivity takes on many shapes and sizes. For a warehouse, productivity might be all about how it manages to pick and ship 30,000 cartons a day. At a distribution center, the story might be how it processes more than 10,000 orders daily. And on an assembly line, the focus might be on how 1,000 units come together in a few short hours.
In other words, shape and size don't tell the entire story. Instead, scoring high on the productivity scale is more about how you manage what it is you have to manage.
On the following pages, the materials handling systems that won this year's awards are featured. Each is followed by an interview with a key executive who details what has happened since we originally did the story in 2000.
These three companies were selected by our Editorial Advisory Board from the two dozen warehousing and manufacturing stories carried in MMH last year. They selected the winners for their excellence in five areas:
The flexibility to alter operations to respond to unplanned events
The ability to deliver consistently the right item to the right destination at the right time
Customer service as practiced both internally and externally
The capability to respond quickly to changing market conditions, and
A clearly demonstrated ability to improve overall operations.
We congratulate this year's winners on their achievements and for raising the productivity bar once again.
