And learn how to improve productivity in manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing through an extensive educational forum.

It's almost time for the most comprehensive international materials handling show and forum held in the U.S. this year. The ProMat 2001 four-day event, Feb. 12-15, will showcase equipment, systems, and technologies that offer productivity solutions through materials handing. Sponsored by Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), the event will take place at Chicago's McCormick Place North.
Over 45,000 professionals from over 80 countries are expected to attend. They will be looking for productivity solutions for their manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing operations from 600 plus exhibitors.
John Nofsinger, CEO of MHIA, says "pre-registration is up from the last time this event was held 2 years ago, and we expect ProMat 2001 to be the industry's first ever event to top the 300,000 sq ft mark in exhibit space."
An educational conference that runs concurrently with the show will focus on ways to improve productivity in manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing.
Sponsored by the Material Handling Institute (MHI), the conference includes seminars, workshops, and tutorials designed to aid attendees in solving their supply chain challenges. Industry experts will lead educational sessions focusing on the latest materials handling innovations and applications as well as industry issues such as ergonomics and worker safety.
According to Nofsinger, the biggest difference in the conference this year is the addition of a high-profile, Executive symposium: The logistics behind e-commerce on Monday, Feb. 12. The free event is sponsored by MHIA and Boston-based AMR Research.
The symposium will host a full-day of keynote addresses from seven senior executives. Keynotes include Larry Brown, vice president of worldwide process technology and quality, Dell Computer Corp., Ann Drake, CEO of DSC Logistics, and Jim Pierce, president, enterprise group, PSINet Consulting Solutions.
"They will speak to the importance of materials handling logistics to the success of old and new economy companies," says Nofsinger.
Also new this year is a 20,000 sq ft Information Technology (IT) Village, located in Hall B of McCormick Place North. Forty-five exhibitors will display a variety of data capture, software, and IT solutions that support materials handling and logistics processes.
"The IT village responds to visitor requests to make the giant show floor more visitor friendly by physically differentiating the IT and equipment areas," says Nofsinger.
In addition, a new warehouse benchmarking lab will be located in the IT Village. The lab will be the subject of a conference seminar and will be demonstrated throughout the show.
"An ever enlarging database, populated with performance metrics, allows a visitor to compare their situation to that of leading practitioners and will help point to areas of improvement opportunity," says Nofsinger.
