Worthington steel pallet business debuts
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/2000
Worthington Industries, a diversified metal processing company, has created a new business-Worthington Steelpac Systems (York, Pa.) that will produce custom steel shipping pallets for a variety of shipment needs.
The idea for the product began when customers began describing problems in using wood to protect their products during shipment.
Working closely with Harley-Davidson and Worthington's Dietrich Metal Framing, the research and development department of Worthington was able to find a steel solution, which produced a safer, stronger, and environmentally-friendly, returnable packaging solution for customers and for potential use across Worthington business divisions.
"Wood pallets wear out quickly, usually in one trip and they present disposal problems. Plastic pallets are bulky, heavy, and difficult to dispose," says John P. McConnel, chairman and CEO.
"Steel pallets are significantly lighter and more durable than wood or plastic."
Steelpac began producing customized steel pallets for Harley-Davidson, the company's first customer, in July. Total conversion to the full steel pallet by Harley-Davidson is expected soon.
