Closed-loop program to clean up Texas air
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/2000
A new agency rebate program, believed to be the first such program in the country, is a chance for forklift operators in Texas to experiment with new equipment, clean up the air, and improve maintenance and fuel economy.
Through grant funding from the Texas State Energy Conservation Office, the state's Railroad Commission will cover 80% of the cost of purchase and installation of electronic, closed-loop feedback systems for propane forklifts.
According to Heather Ball, assistant director for marketing and public education of the Railroad Commission, a closed-loop system uses the same kind of electronic controls used on automobiles. This allows fuel regulators to manage air/fuel ratio for combustion in an optimized manner.
In addition to keeping the air clean, the rebate program will help keep Texas businesses ahead of the game, says Michael L. Williams, Railroad Commission chairman-referring to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's possible intent to require emission standards on forklifts.
