Sort out site chaos

Can

By Martha Spizziri, Web Editor -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/2001

How many sites do you have on your "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" list? Do you even remember why you saved them all? If not, you might want to download a bookmark-management utility.

Special software programs that help you manage your bookmarks can be a big help. They let you add notes to remind yourself what's on each site. Some let you actually save complete Web pages to your hard drive, so that even if the site disappears in a few months you'll have the page with all its original information on your computer.

Trial and "lite" versions of bookmark management programs can easily be found for free, and fully functional versions cost only about $25 to $30. Just visit a popular download site and search for "bookmark management utility." A few to try:

One popular bookmark tool is Compass, available at www.softgauge.com. Compass' Microsoft Explorer-like interface lets you sort sites into folders. You can import bookmarks from your browser or multiple browsers too. (It's designed to work with Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Opera.) You can sort sites and folders alphabetically or by other criteria just by choosing a menu option. And you can search for sites that you've stored by entering words that appear in the page's title or in the notes you added.

SurfSaver (www.surfsaver.com) saves complete pages, including graphics and active links, to your computer. (A similar tool is iHarvest, which you access via the Web: www.iharvest.com.)

SurfSaver integrates with your browser. You can open a Web page, right click, and open a dialog box that lets you save the page, make a folder to put it in, modify its title, and add keywords and notes. A really useful option lets you save all the pages that are linked to the page you're on, or save multiple levels of a Web site. And, since SurfSaver copies the entire page, the search function works not only on the page title and notes, but on the text of all your saved pages. That's extremely useful if you're looking for mention of a particular topic and can't remember what site it's on.
