Foodservice industry makes strides with bar codes
Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/2002
Use of bar codes on cases and inner packages has reached new heights in the foodservice industry, according to the Efficient Foodservice Response (www.efr-central.com). The group is a joint project by five trade associations in the foodservice and grocery industries. A survey of foodservice distribution facilities shows that case coding is now used 72 percent of the time and 94 percent with inner packages. Bar codes were used most often with equipment and supplies (78 percent) and least often with produce (22 percent). Bar code quality, however, continues to be an issue with only 82% of marked cases and 74% of inner packs could be read by scanners.
