The latest in lift truck design
From pallet trucks to the latest in AC powered lift trucks, suppliers are coming up with interesting new twists that improve performance.
Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 5/1/2003
Just when you might think announcements of new lift truck designs might be flagging, that's not the case. In fact, the latest design advances are across many different types of lift trucks, opening the door to higher productivity from narrow-aisle trucks and sideloaders to counterbalanced and pallet truck models. Best of all, end users are benefiting from greater lift truck versatility and improved performance.
Perhaps the biggest single splash is from what seems like a flood of AC-powered lift trucks. Long used in Europe, AC power was first introduced here just three years ago. And as end users are discovering, there are good reasons to opt for the new technology, which is available on a wide range of truck types.
Battery charges generally last longer, cutting back on charging requirements and keeping trucks out on the floor for greater periods of time. In fact, power can even be regenerated during braking, extending battery life still further. In addition, maintenance requirements are reduced with AC because these units lack the brushes and contactors of DC motors. In the end, suppliers say AC trucks, while higher in initial cost, are less expensive to operate over their lifetime.
With counterbalanced trucks, in particular, there is particular attention being paid to engines. The emphasis is on maximizing engine power for the job at hand while protecting the truck against abuse by the operator. In addition, there's new technology that minimizes emissions by these internal combustion engines.
Meanwhile, the handling of long loads both indoors and out has also been given a boost with some newly released sideloaders that are highly maneuverable in tight quarters. Similarly, narrow-aisle trucks and orderpickers feature advances that make it easier for the operator to be more efficient. And rounding out the review of new lift truck designs on the following pages are pallet trucks with improved operator ergonomics and resulting ease of use.
