Don't build for Easter

Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/2003

Packaging is one of the most intensive parts of the distribution center, yet is often among the least engineered areas, according to Bill Kuipers, a partner at Spaide, Kuipers & Co. He spoke at the National Conference on Operations & Fulfillment recently. Kuipers said proper selection of containers is one way of making packaging more efficient, but that often people buy containers and totes for their largest items. This wastes space on conveyors, in storage systems and on outbound trucks. "Don't build the church for Easter Sunday," he cautions.
