Designing the more perfect pallet
Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/2003
While many figure there isn't much that can be done to improve pallet design, Virginia Tech's Dr. Marshal (Mark) White knows better. "Our research is examining how pallets interact with the packages they hold as well as the handling equipment used for them. Once we know that, we can optimize the design," he says.
And users of the newly released Pallet Design Soft-ware version 3.3 can take advantage of White's research. The software takes into account many factors including specific information about the product, including its container from cartons to drums. Pallets designed this way can weigh as much as 7 or 8 pounds less than others.
