Product Focus

Here are some bar code scanner announcements that have recently crossed our editors' desks.

Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/2003

Handheld imager

Powered by Adaptus imaging technology, the Imageteam 5800 (IT5800) handheld industrial imager captures bar code images at distances up to 82 inches and processes the content 270 times per second. Shock-absorbing overmold protection allows the IT5800 to withstand low temperature environments and repeated drops from heights up to 6.5 feet.

Small reader, big performance

Delivering the functions of a large unit, the BCL 21/22 bar code reader can scan bar code widths of 0.15 millimeters at a rate of 800 to 1,000 scans per second. Bar code widths of 0.8 millimeters can also be read from up to 450 millimeters away. The BCL 21/22 is designed to allow for either straight or angled scanning. Users can format data, calculate statistics and compare codes using the system's input program.

Smart scanner

Featuring an auto learning function, the DS4600A fixed position bar code reader automatically selects a suitable configuration when the reader is placed in front of a bar code label. Users can easily adjust the reader to accommodate any application, making the reader ideal in a range of manufacturing applications. Three models are available: high-density, medium-range and long-range. The long-range version features a maximum reading distance of 1,000 millimeters.

Fits like a ring

Slip the RS 1 Ring Scanner onto the index finger, activate it by pressing a button and easily read bar codes from distances up to 30 inches. The RS 1 scanner weighs less than 1.7 ounces. Its Mylar scan element is frictionless to protect the moving parts from any wear and tear. A lightweight cable can connect the wearable scanner to a variety of data collection and transmission devices.

Reader processes data faster

Code Reader 2 (CR2) features Alchemy Solutions Au1100 processor, a highly integrated system-on-a-chip processor that allows CR2 to perform like a laser scanner and also read complex two-dimensional matrix symbols. The compact reader uses a 1.3 million pixel CMOS sensor and a 400 Megahertz CPU capable of processing images more than 20 times faster than standard imaging systems, according to the supplier.

Read tilted, damaged, hidden labels

Suited to applications involving a large depth of field, the CLV 490 fixed position bar code scanner delivers tilt-independent read rates. To ensure optimum reading at the maximum depth of field, a control function directs the scanner to automatically focus according to the object's distance. CLV 490 is compact, measuring 3.6 x 4.5 x 4.8 inches. Its read range is 508 to 2100 millimeters. Modular advanced recognition technology also allows the scanner to read tilted, damaged and partially hidden from view labels.

Compact scanner has large read area

Compact and lightweight, the BL-600 series of laser bar code readers weighs only 115 grams and makes as many as 500 scans per second. Polygon mirror scanning technology allows twice the reading area and incident reading angle of conventional bar code readers. The BL-600 can read bars as thin as 0.125 millimeters and operate at distances of up to 330 millimeters. Automatic gain control (AGC) logic provides stable, high-speed performance despite the color and contrast of bar codes. A specular reflection cancellation (SRC) circuit operates in conjunction with AGC to eliminate reading errors caused by highly reflective backgrounds. Keyence Corp. of America

Scan with the touch of a button

The Flic laser bar code reader scans, decodes and stores bar code symbols using a single button. A flexible user interface consisting of a single LED and audible tones provides indications about scanning quality, memory capacity and downloading success. Flic can be tethered to the host for immediate data entry or used as a portable reader, storing 100 bar codes in its memory. A time stamp can also be stored with each bar code to automatically synchronize each scan with the host's system clock. Microvision

Linear imaging for harsh environments

Added to a family of wireless handheld devices is the 2435 handheld computer with a linear imaging scan engine. It incorporates Vista scanning technology and is designed to operate reliably in harsh environments. The linear imager reads damaged, low contrast, laminated and high-density bar codes. The scanner is activated by a side-mounted button, which allows one-handed operation. A variety of keypad layouts is available.

Scan package labels easily

High-speed reading of linear bar codes and two-dimensional symbologies over a wide field of view is possible with the iQ160. The high-resolution linear CCD camera system features a large depth of field, co-planar laser illumination and a variety of lens options to provide an optimal scan area. Its illumination system is capable of marking a clear decode line for easy alignment as well as eliminating glare during scanning. Suitable applications include high-speed, small package scanning, parcel handling and sortation.

Digital reader is more reliable

The AV4000 CCD is a bar code reader featuring LED illumination and digital zoom technology. Integrated co-planar LED illumination provides the same high read rates as sodium illumination while eliminating the safety concerns associated with laser illumination. Digital technology features greater reliability and image quality. A single box design also ensures that the camera and illumination are permanently aligned.
