Bad floor plans promote shrinkage
-- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/2003
1. Don't place dumpsters by a door - they're an ideal place to hide stolen items. Publicize that dumpsters are searched often.
2. This parking area is too close to the facility. The further people park from the warehouse, the better.
3. Receiving and shipping docks are too close together with no barrier between, making it easy to transfer items from one truck to another.
4. Staging should be farther from the docks to make it harder to slip something in a truck.
5. This warehouse has too many doors. Only one door should be open, and it should be monitored at all times.
6 & 7. Restrooms and lounge areas should be close to the dock. Their current locations force truckers and others to walk through the warehouse to reach them, increasing the risk of theft.
8. Remove bushes, especially those close to doors,
since they are good hiding spots for stolen items.
