New rack system revs up motorcycle storage
Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/2/2003
Finding storage solutions for products of certain sizes and shapes can be problematic, especially when the products are Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Luckily, owners of St. Paul Harley-Davidson found a rack system that accommodates their new and previously owned motorcycles, making storage much more practical.
A three-level, two-deep push-back rack system increases the number of bikes that can be stored in the same floor space. Bikes, previously stored wall to wall on the floor, didn't utilize space in the 26,000 square foot facility very well. And even though the owners decided to expand the facility to 58,000 square feet as business grew, they needed a new storage scheme.
Prior to the expansion, employees performed the ritual of physically walking the bikes to the parking lot, which doubled as a showroom on sunny days. But when it rained, the bikes stayed inside, making it difficult for staff to access a particular one in the cramped quarters. As many as ten bikes would have to be moved to show a particular one to a customer.
The new rack system organizes the bikes into a much more practical configuration while making best use of floor space. Bikes are now stored on three levels of a double-sized push-back rack, making it easy to both putaway and retrieve specific bikes without having to move others first.
Protection is another important benefit. The sturdy racks free the valuable bikes from damage previously imposed by being shuffled around. Welded bed frames prevent accidents by preventing rails from being loosened during product cycling. Cushioned cart stops reduce noise as the racks move and protect the bikes from damage when the rack comes to a stop.
