Low-emission trucks solve operator misuse issue
Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/2/2003
When lift truck operators adjust trucks to achieve faster speeds, physical and environmental damage almost inevitably ensues. That was exactly the case at Delta-National Tire Corp.'s warehouses, and the company was feeling the effects. It needed to find a solution or continue living with high repair costs to materials handling equipment caused by travel speeds as well as less than clean air in the facility.
To combat the issue, Delta-National bought a new fleet of low-emission lift trucks for its four 100,000-plus square foot facilities. The trucks incorporate an electronic fuel injection system that provides sufficient power to get the job done while providing tamper-resistant features that prevent operator misuse.
"Our operators love the power they get from these trucks," says Alex Alpe, assistant warehouse manager. "Long runs and steep, concrete ramps make this an especially tough environment, and these trucks have performed especially well."
The company no longer spends valuable time and money fixing damaged lift trucks, racking and walls caused by fast travel speeds. In addition, Delta-National gets four additional hours of operation per each LP tank, adding to overall productivity at the warehouse. And the trucks' exceptional fuel efficiency results in significant reduction of fuel expenses.
"Obviously, the health and safety of our employees are of concern to us," Alpe explains. "But when you can attach an actual cost savings to these new trucks, it's a win-win situation for everyone."
