The what-if lift truck
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2004
While automakers are talking about their concept cars at the Detroit auto show this month, SKF is talking about its concept lift truck. Yes, that's SKF the bearing supplier that has never produced a lift truck.
What the company has done is build a hydraulic-free prototype truck using only mechanical and electronic components. The E-Truck has an electromechanical steering system, and actuators for lifting, tilting, side shifting and mast height control.
The company says replacement of hydraulics reduces maintenance and allows
quieter operation. Meanwhile, the direct-drive electric motor eliminates the
traditional gearbox, increasing efficiency and simplifying design.
