Focus on racks

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/2004

Improve carton flow

A carton flow system integrates the concept of traditional flow rack with the flow properties of full-width roller track to efficiently transport products. Roller Rack carton flow units are easy to assemble without any tools. A Span-Track-Ready proprietary beam is provided.

Sturdy pallet rack

TUF Rack pallet rack is constructed with tubular upright frames for greater impact-resistance and durability. A teardrop pattern is stamped on 2-inch centers and accommodates many beam types including beams with gravity pins and metal safety clips. Uprights are available with either 3 × 15/8 inch or 3 × 3 inch tubular posts, with the 3-inch tubes offering the greatest load capacity.

Push pallets to the back

Providing high-density storage and accessibility, the Push-Bak rack uses a dynamic cart-on-rail system to push pallet loads to the back. When a load is retrieved at the aisle, the deeper pallet load automatically advances to the aisle. Storage density with the Push-bak equals that of drive-in rack, yet every lane is accessible at all times.

Cantilever rack withstands abuse

A cantilever rack system features high-strength steel columns that are tapered to counteract deflection. Its columns are also pre-punched on both sides, allowing users to convert from single- to double-sided units. Welded to the column, a steel base provides a stable foundation. A powder-coat finish is corrosion-resistant and withstands rough conditions.

Pallet rack with various beam/frame sizes

Available in various size options, a pallet rack features roll-formed one-piece beams for high strength-to-weight ratios. Beam step heights range from 7/8 to 15/8 inches and adjust on 3-inch vertical centers. The face of the beam also has an M-design recessed configuration for added strength and to accept pressure-sensitive labels. Frames are available in five load capacity ranges. Standard heights range from 48 to 240 inches while possible depths include 30, 36, 42, 48, 54 and 60 inches.

For medium- to heavy-duty storage

Designed for medium- and heavy-duty storage applications, the Cant-I-Beam rack system is constructed of rugged l-beam components. Its columns and arms are l-beam sections with the arms secured to the column by four bolts. Arms can be adjusted vertically on 4-inch centers and are available in several angles of incline for load retention. Base members are also constructed of l-beams and fasten to the column with six or eight bolts. One base unit is required for single-side storage while two bases are necessary for double-side storage. Column load capacity is up to 40,000 pounds per side and arm capacity is up to 14,000 pounds.

Nest racks to save space

When not in use, the portable Nestainer racks nest together from front to back to save space. Each rack adds only 5½ inches to the overall nested height and overhang is limited to two inches per rack. This results in nesting ratios as great as 12:1, depending on rack height and depth. Nestainer's inverted angles also provide safe, secure stacking. Available in 1-inch increments, the rack's standard dimensions range from 30 to 96 inches. Three deck designs are possible and offer three load capacities: 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 pounds.

Rack that's tough

Ideal for high-volume, heavy-throughput applications, the Tuff-55 structural rack line uses reinforced channel corners and thick steel columns to provide durability and resist abuse. Many rack types are available including selective, pushback, double-deep, drive-in and pallet flow. Positive bolted connections ensure strength and stability. The structural upright and load beam capacities vary based on span levels and beam lengths.

Ensure smooth carton flow

The Profile series of roller track features the Slide-Glide design to ensure consistently smooth carton flow. This design uses a full-length, captive T-slot on each side of the track to provide secure guide attachment without increasing the roller track footprint. It also eliminates carton misalignment and offers a compact and efficient use of lateral space in modular workstations and flow racks. The roller track measures 1.4 × 1.6 inches and is available with 1.3- and 1.7-inch diameter wheels.

Portable and stackable

Portable racks have posts that can easily be assembled and dismantled to accommodate a variety of storage needs. Available in four deck and base patterns, Stack Racks can be stacked four to six high and hold up to 4,000 pounds. Deck styles include open standard, steel, plywood and wire mesh.

Tubular design for added strength

Featuring a closed tube construction, the SK2000 rack is stronger and 250% more damage resistant than open-backed rack, according to the supplier. While the rack's closed tubular uprights provide torsion and impact resistance, its 1 × 2 inch horizontal tubular bracing increases the frame's strength. Features include multiple offset anchor holes for flexibility, tear drop and rivet options and an auto-engaging clip for safety.

Two styles of pallet rack

Two styles of pallet rack, keystone and teardrop, meet a variety of storage needs. Designed for optimum strength-to-weight ratio, the keystone rack has columns with solid corners and keystone slots punched in the area of least stress for maximum load capacity. Its U-shaped horizontal and diagonal braces are welded in z-patterns for greater strength. Rack uprights feature a double row of teardrop-shaped holes that allow for 2-inch vertical beam adjustment. Its beams are also roll-formed with a double steel thickness on top for maximum strength at the load point.
