And if Nextel communications has anything to say about it, the first truly wireless factory will be here sooner rather than later. The communications provider is currently working to identify a suitable company and location to deploy a full suite of wireless business solutions. It is expected to include the entire manufacturing process, inventory management, shipping and logistics as well as field service and sales force automation.

"Wireless technology can streamline processes, increase efficiency and reduce costs with real-time access to customers, employees, vendors, systems and data," says Leslie Baker, vice president of Nextel's manufacturing industry segment. The prototype facility will include in-building wireless network coverage and an all-digital voice and data system.
