Software integrates all packaging information
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/2004
Ever heard of a "packaging ecosystem?" No, it isn't the latest exhibit at your local museum of science. Instead, it refers to a new solution recently launched by 3M (www.3M.com) that manages packaging information via a secure, integrated software system.
Integrated Packaging Tool version 4.05 connects all of the systems involved in product creation, such as artwork, packaging specifications and bill of materials, into a centralized, Web-based data system. Essentially, the tool records all packaging information such as product structure, design and stock keeping unit, and feeds it to the supply chain execution software.
"With this integrated system, users can ensure branding compliance, facilitate product design and engineering and manage product surety as well as the sourcing of packaging spending," says Mike Haldane, business manager of 3M's industrial services and solutions division. He says users will post considerable cost savings with better and more coordinated use of resources.
In addition, the tool enables users to more easily comply with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) CFR Part 11, which supports data integrity by setting minimum standards for the accuracy and reliability of records.
"The system provides time-stamped audit trails, record retrieval, system security and electronic signatures," says Haldane. It also includes modules for event-driven workflow, centralized enterprise labeling and production line reporting.
