What makes an MES

By Bob Trebilcock, Editor at Large -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/2005

AMR Research, Boston, Mass., has identified three characteristics that are unique to an MES system:

1. It tracks products and orders on the plant floor, managing the workload and collecting transactions for reporting to ERP systems.

2. It electronically dispatches the orders or product requirements to shop floor personnel, allowing the schedule to change quickly in response to unexpected demand or to recover from equipment or material problems.

3. Finally, MES uses its tracking capabilities to provide other data services to the shop floor such as quality tracking, electronic work instructions, and lot traceability, among others.
