Manufacturers embracing wireless solutions
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 3/1/2005
Manufacturing companies are looking to embrace wireless business solutions that promote efficiency and cut costs, according to a recent poll conducted by Nextel (www.nextel.com).
A majority saw the need for a combination of cellular and WiFi capabilities with data capture technologies. In fact, expansion of bar code and RFID use topped the list of priorities for manufacturers. The top four uses of wireless technology in manufacturing plants included cellular calling (100% of respondents); bar code scanning (78%); Blackberry devices (68%); and push-to-talk service (59%).
According to Leslie Baker, vice president of manufacturing for Nextel, "The factory of the future is happening today as manufacturers realize the benefits of mobile communications within the four walls of their operations and across their extended supply chains."
