Wal-Mart and RFID research
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 7/1/2005
Getting RFID right in the supply chain is no easy task. Fortunately, getting it right is what the RFID Research Center (479-200-7389) at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville is all about. Wal-Mart initiated founding of the Center, which is part of the Sam M. Walton College of Business.
At a grand opening last month, Dr. Bill Hardgrave, director of the Center, said the facility will research how to: deploy RFID effectively, analyze and interpret the data collected and build the business case for using the technology to make supply chain process improvements.
The 8,000 square foot center is housed in the warehouse for a local business, Hanna's Candle Co. In addition to RFID tag printers, readers and antennas, there is an extensive conveyor test loop that includes a range of conveyors and sortation equipment (Hytrol, 870-972-8901). The center is a miniature warehouse able to handle and manage RFID marked cases and pallets.
