Supply chain software reboundsThe market for supply chain management (SCM) software reversed a two-year decline and posted growth of 4% in 2004. The market, which includes solutions ranging from ERP to warehouse management systems (WMS), totaled nearly $5.5 billion. That's one of the findings of a new report from AMR Research. Looking forward, AMR expects 5% compound annual growth for the next five years. To understand the uptick in business, you have to look at the causes behind the decline, says Kevin O'Marah, AMR's vice president of research. Product information management enables order fulfillment Just when you thought you'd learned all the acronyms for software applications you'd ever need to know, along comes PIM, short for product information management. PIM is a relatively new application space that does for a company's products what customer relationship management (CRM) and supplier relationship management (SRM) do for other parts of the business: create one central data warehouse for all the relevant, real-time information about the products a company manufactures or distributes. That information can be accessed by the sales and marketing side of the organization that need descriptions, images and merchandizing information about a product. The same is true for the transportation department that has to comply with hazardous materials codes. It's also valuable for the warehouse manager, or a WMS system, that needs to know hierarchical information like orderable quantities, the number of units in a case and the number of cases on a pallet. MESA International presents MES webcast MESA International, the organization representing manufacturers and information system providers of manufacturing solutions, is sponsoring Plant To Enterprise, a series of three Webcasts focused on the real-time integration of the processes in the manufacturing plant with the business activities in the enterprise. The first Webcast, "How manufacturing solutions boost enterprise systems' effectiveness," was broadcast on June 9 and is now archived on the MESA website. "Setting the right functional boundaries between ERP and MES," which examines the relationship between ERP and MES systems was broadcast on July 19, and will be available soon. The date for "Integrating ERP with MES," the third in the series, will be determined soon.
