Focus on sortation

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/2006

Transfer vehicles sort quickly

High-speed sorting transfer vehicles (STVs) move material accurately, accelerate at one foot per second to speeds up to 656 feet per minute and transport up to 750 loads per hour per loop. STVs are designed to help eliminate the sorting and transport delays that can occur with conveyor or automatic guided vehicle systems. STVs can run either on the floor or on a guide track that can be easily shortened or lengthened as needed. Vehicles can be added or removed depending on material movement requirements and floor plan.

Right-angle sortation conveyor

The ViperSort is a right-angle sortation conveyor for small to medium size products. Its patented design enables the sorting of cylindrical products and extremely thin items such as blister packs and vinyl envelopes. The conveyor, which is available in four widths, sorts up to 120 items per minute. The maximum unit package weight is 25 pounds. Additional features include flexible sort locations and close divert centers. Adjustable MS-type floor supports are available.

Bi-directionally sort 30 tires a minute

The TireSort accurately sorts and transports tires without scarring or scuffing the sidewalls. It can bi-directionally sort passenger and light truck tires at rates up to 30 tires per minute. The modular design features a 36-inch effective width and sorts tires up to 65 pounds. Construction of the sorter frame and transfer module is modular in design and fabricated from 10-gauge steel with bolted connections. The conveyor is easy to install and features a minimum number of components.

Vertical sortation system saves floor space

The small-footprint LogiSort vertical unit sorts up to 30 items per minute and takes advantage of unused vertical space by enabling item diverges and merges to and from vertically stacked conveyors. The high-speed LogiSort handles items of varying weights and dimensions. It processes irregularly shaped objects such as garment boxes or other multi-sided packages, replacing the need for manual handling. The centralized system also offers reduced maintenance requirements, fewer components and a range of widths. The LogiSort is compatible with virtually any belted conveyor system including those using item tracking.

Sliding Shoe Sorter Sorts up to 150 Cartons per Minute

The AutoSort 13 sortation conveyor is designed to accurately track and gently sort all types of carton sizes and configurations at designated points along the transportation line. The conveyor sorts up to 150 cartons per minute at speeds up to 500 feet per minute. Product to be sorted is tracked and diverted by pushers (sliding shoes), which are designed to operate from the inside of the extruded carrying tubes through a slot running the length of the extension. This allows for free, unobstructed operation even when the carrying surface of the slat becomes contaminated with debris.

Software optimizes conveying and sorting

SortDirector version 5.0 warehouse control system (WCS) software provides strategic routing and sorting of cartons and containers. The modular software optimizes container movement through order-selection zones, provides real-time control of the sorters and provides shipping-consolidation functionality. It also manages routing of cartons through order-fulfillment zones, wave planning, split-case planning, pick-ticket and label printing.

Narrow-belt sorter

The NBS 90 sorter utilizes a series of narrow belts, each with its own take-up, to redirect cartons, packages and other items. High-friction rollers rise between the belts to grip and gently divert product at a 90-degree angle in either direction on the fly, delivering quick and accurate sortation. This system is ideal for applications where change in orientation is beneficial, space is limited and relatively high throughput is required. The NBS 90 sorts up to 60 items per minute at speeds up to 300 feet per minute.

Tilt tray sorter offers sorting flexibility

A high-speed tilt tray sorter handles products that vary in size, shape and packaging method. The accurate system is available in multiple configurations, based on product handling requirements. Faster delivery and better tracking of orders and inventory are benefits of the system. Returns processing, loose receipts processing and zip code sortation are also improved.

Sort with versatility

The 3D tilt tray sorter with linear motor drive is a high capacity system for sorting various kinds of goods. Small parcels, packages, delicate products such as glassware and grocery items, as well as heavy freight, boxes and baggage are safely conveyed and discharged to the right destination. The sorter employs a unique three-dimensional parabolic movement to discharge goods to predetermined destinations. The gentle handling of products and the directed lateral discharge path make it possible to use smaller, closely spaced destinations, allowing significant space savings.
