Foundation selects scholars
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 3/30/2006
Some attendees of NA 2006 will be here to learn more about materials handling for their present jobs.
Meanwhile, the scholarship selection committee of the Material Handling Education Foundation (Booth 1704) will be reviewing scholarship applications to support the next generation of materials handling professionals. Providing an educated base of students for the materials handling industry is the mission of MHEFI. The organization is celebrating its 30th year and has given away more than $1.7 million in scholarships, according to Victoria Wheeler, the foundation's executive director. "We are very proud of our track record," Wheeler said. "Sixty percent of the students we support enter the user field, which means there is an educated customer familiar with the material handling field. Another 15% go to work for material handling industry solution providers, and an equal number go into teaching about material handling."MHEFI identifies universities and colleges that offer a curriculum promoting materials handling and logistics. Once the institutions have been identified, the foundation solicits their best students to apply for scholarships and enter the field. MHEFI gives out approximately 30 named scholarships a year, ranging from $1,500 to $6,000. In all, annual scholarships total about $85,000. This year's winners will be announced in the next issue of Mhove, the Material Handling Industry of America newsletter. Wheeler said the scholarship program is supported by donations from the industry. "An industry member can have a named scholarship by donating $1,500 or more," she explained. "The scholarship can be named after a company, a valued employee or customer or even in memory of someone."
