IBM enters supply chain management

Known traditionally for its computing solutions, IBM has now entered the supply chain fray.
In cooperation with IBM consulting, the new group, IBM Business Transformation Outsourcing, is offering to operate a client's supply chain, mitigating logistics costs of 3PLs. According to IBM, the concept is new for the market.
"We are acting as a global trade orchestrator where we manage 3PLs processes, by utilizing the relationships we've built," says Chris Sciacca, manager of media relations, Integrated Supply Chain for IBM.
The system would provide logistics strategy, network design and optimization, logistics procurement and operations management, as well as global trade management for its clients.
Essentially acting as a "4PL," IBM would secure national and local transportation for product, and would guarantee product safety. The company comments that traditional 3PLs "lack the deep end-to-end skills and capabilities" that IBM can provide through supply chain immersion.
Sciacca mentions that in addition to offering logistics services, IBM also offers its more traditional line of products—hardware, consulting and software applications.
