Focus on pick-to-light

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/2006

Pick lights increase accuracy

The QuickPick family of pick lights visually brings the operator to exactly the right carousel, shelf and cell. Two QuickPick light methods are available. One uses a LightFrame to surround each carousel carrier (bin). Each carrier shelf level has two cells or totes. When picking begins, the active carousel's top lights blink. In addition, the QuickPick light beside the active cell lights up showing the operator the exact cell to pick from. The other QuickPick light method uses lights mounted in a shelf liner placed under each cell or tote. When the pick is being made, the light under the tote containing the item lights up to indicate its location.

Paperless picking system

The SwiftPic pick-to-light system is a paperless picking automated solution for distribution center fulfillment. Its ability to support wave picking, pack-to-light, put-to-light, pick-to-display, and pick-and-pack functions is enhanced by SwiftOES, the companion order picking software. SwiftPic manages processes typically performed by wireless devices for functional versatility. By replacing paper-based picking with pick-to-light technology, companies can expect picking productivity to double in paperless picking configurations such as flow/shelf rack picking and mobile cart picking.

Cart features 16 lighted order positions

The Lightning pick cart was designed to optimize batch picking operations by reducing walking/travel time, improving pick rates and increasing order accuracy. The classic cart features a standard laptop computer with color LCD screen, omni-directional scanner for hands-free scanning, up to 16 lighted order positions and a rechargeable mobile power pack. The system maintains communications with the Lightning pick server through a wireless local area network.

Software manages inventory

Pick-to-light technology controlled by FastPic's inventory management software can greatly increase productivity and throughput of pick-and-put applications. The software allows multiple orders to be batched simultaneously for increased throughput. Pick-to-light directs operators to stock items by visually indicating where picking is needed. Batched picks are arranged in order, requiring less travel time by the operator. The system virtually assures that correct items are selected, reducing picking errors. FastPic software includes a variety of supervisory reports and options that provide an added level of inventory management, control and security.

Modular pick-to-light system

Easpick Trak3 pick-to-light components enable increased accuracy in warehouse and distribution center applications. Trak3 devices snap into the track at the pick face with a "cable-less" connection, allowing easy configuration and reconfiguration. The standard four-inch wide Trak3 pick-to display and two-inch wide pick-to-light components permit dense placement and more precise alignment with the pick location. Acknowledge-ment buttons on the Trak3 devices are designed for easy response to finger pressure. Pressed buttons will make a connection if any of four touch actuators are engaged, offering redundancy and longer life. Trak3 units use six small, easily readable LEDs instead of a single incandescent gumball picking direction light.

Put-to-light system

This put-to-light system is based on the DirectPick light-directed picking system. Containers from vendors travel along the conveyor to a put station. The operator removes items from the containers and places them in totes on the rack, following the put lights, which indicate how many items should be placed in each tote. When a tote is full, the operator pushes the tote through the rack. The totes are then placed on another conveyor and head to shipping where they are sent to stores to replenish inventory.

Light-directed order fulfillment systems

Light-directed order fulfillment systems automate order processing and product distribution needs. The Order Fulfillment System (OFS) acts as a central server for all automation and picking subsystems. In addition, the OFS controls order distribution to the proper subsystem. Pick-to-light, pick/put to store, RF-picking, carousel, wireless cart and other third-party picking solutions can be controlled by the OFS, which provides order status data from all of the pick subsystems back to the enterprise software.

Pick-to-light system eliminates zones

The Pick-MAX system is a pick-to-light system that is capable of capturing the ID of pickers as they complete picks, improving productivity. The system provides a hands-free interface that does not require pickers to push a button to complete a pick. This point-and-pick capability is provided by the Pick-MAX system"s "Watch-Me" device—an identification unit worn on the wrist. The lightweight device identifies each picker to the Pick-MAX modules during a pick or put, providing picker accountability for every pick and eliminating the need for picker logon and logoff functions. The rechargeable wristband requires no zone balancing or order profiling and eliminates bottlenecks.

Computer-aided picking systems

Pick-to-light systems can be integrated seamlessly with a company's order management system or its third-party provided warehouse automation system. The primary goal of Spectrum is to turn the picking operation into a high throughput order pipeline. The system virtually eliminates paper in the warehouse and substantially reduces picking errors. Order pickers can achieve higher unit per hour productivity in the Spectrum system since activity is limited to the task of picking product. Once a person is trained to use the system, usually in less than 30 minutes, individual picking productivity can be significantly improved.
