AIM honors Haberman
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/2006
Alan L. Haberman, governor-at-large of GS1 US (formerly the Uniform Code Council), has received the Richard R. Dilling Award in recognition of his career-long contribution to the development and growth of the automatic identification and mobility industry. The award is the highest honor conferred by AIM Global, the association for automatic identification and mobility.
Haberman was part of the ad hoc committee that created what became the original universal product code (UPC) system in the early 1970s. He has served on the board of governors of GS1 US, a not-for-profit standards organization, since its formation in 1974.
Haberman is now working to develop standards for radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. He helped establish the Auto-ID Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999, and today he serves as chairman of Sub Committee 31 on Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques (SC31), a committee of Joint Technical Committee 1 on Information Technology (JTC1). As chair of SC31, he manages the development of international bar code and RFID standards.
In 2000, Haberman received AIM Global's Percival Award. He is the only recipient of both AIM Global awards.
