GM plant experiments with hydrogen
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/2006
General Motors of Canada is launching a two-year pilot project to use hydrogen-powered lift trucks at the GM plant in Oshawa. The project will use the beta version of Hydrogenics' HyPM fuel cell power packs in as many as 19 lift trucks and tuggers from NACCO Materials Handling.
Funding for the project comes from Sustainable Development Technology Canada, a foundation created by the Canadian government to support environmentally friendly technologies.
"General Motors of Canada operated two hydrogen-powered forklifts in our car plant in 2005, and we were impressed with the durability and reliability of the vehicles, as well as their environmental potential," says GM's David Paterson.
