Toyota launches 8-Series

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 12/1/2006

Calling them "the world's cleanest internal combustion lift trucks available," Toyota has unveiled its 8-Series lift trucks, which include 3,000 to 6,500 pound, internal combustion, cushion and pneumatic tire models.

"In the 8-Series, we have delivered an environmentally friendly lift truck that not only reduces operation costs and enhances operator safety, it also meets California's 2010 emission standards three years early," says Shankar Basu, president and CEO of Toyota Material Handling USA.

Central to that benchmark is a closed-loop fuel system that automatically optimizes the air-fuel mixture ratio. Working with a three-way catalytic muffler, the system minimizes hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide emissions. As a result, says Basu, all 8-Series gasoline, LPG and CNG trucks produce 70% less smog-forming emissions than the 2007 federal EPA standards allow.

Introducing the new trucks to the press, Martin Boyd, national product planning manager, also stressed durability, reliability, ergonomics and safety features on the new trucks.

A redesigned chassis has significantly less cosmetic sheet metal and plastic, improving durability. Engine hood and stamped steel side panels are tough, too, Boyd says.

Two features in particular extend engine life. The Intelli-Shift option protects critical drive-train components by allowing directional speed changes only at programmable speeds. An improved cooling system reduces the likelihood of engine overheating.

The operator's compartment features additional floor space and more leg room. Other ergonomic enhancements include a swivel seat as well as mini-lever and joystick hydraulic controls. A smaller steering wheel requires less effort, reducing operator shoulder strain, says Boyd.

The 8-Series trucks also feature Toyota's System of Active Stability, which minimizes the potential for tipovers.
