Dock equipment

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 7/1/2007

The market for loading dock equipment in the United States reached about $200 million last year, according to Department of Commerce figures compiled by the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). Dock levelers are a big part of that market and, according to MHIA, about 75% of levelers sold last year were of the pit-mounted variety. Vertical-storing levelers are growing in popularity, but they represent only about 5% of sales.

Dock equipment manufacturers have been gradually consolidating, and today many of the industry's popular brands are made under one corporate umbrella.

What's hot at the dock

Keeping it simple: Install one master control panel for your dock door, dock leveler and vehicle restraint to make life easier for your operators.

Reducing shock: New dock leveler designs create a smoother transition from floor to trailer; couple them with vehicle restraints that stabilize your trailers to reduce dock shock for your lift truck drivers.

Saving energy: Vertical-storing levelers allow your overhead doors to form a tight seal with the floor, reducing energy loss at refrigerated docks.

New products

Tough

SafeTFrame: 4Front ES added more steel to the rear frame of this dock leveler, improving its long-term structural integrity.

Easy to operate

Mantis: Blue Giant took its popular mechanical dock leveler and added hydraulics. Now it activates at the push of a button.

Low maintenance

SEL: Copperloy designed this edge-of-dock leveler to better resist truck impact and other wear and tear.
