Containers improve picking and storage efficiency in carousels

Solution is tailored to suit Johnson & Johnson's surgical product line.

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/2/2007

The Johnson & Johnson operation in Raynham, Mass., which manufactures medical devices for surgery, has containers on its carousels that help maximize the benefits of the overall system and are also nearly 100% space efficient.

The containers were sized to fit the carousel perfectly and designed with compartments that create a perfect fit for carrying around surgical equipment. The containers were also made with end users' inventory in mind.

Making the right container for this project significantly increased the available cube in the carousel. The containers are two inches longer than the front-to-back dimension of the shelf, resulting in an additional 8% storage capacity. By increasing the available cube in the carousel by more than 20% and implementing a straightwall design, these containers are substantially more space-efficient than tapered containers.

The containers have a pick face that's 50% open to allow easy access for part picking and replenishment. And, they can also be pulled forward to pick larger parts or slower moving inventory that's stored in the back of the container.

Made of fire-retardant resin, the plastic containers are antistatic treated to help prevent dust and dirt accumulation. They're also color-coded to indicate part type, style and golden zone area.
