The “behind the scenes” actions of materials handling professionals enable consumers to enjoy products whenever and wherever they want. America owes a good portion of its standard of living to the efficiencies and progress made possible by materials handling logistics. However, materials handlers have not been rewarded with job security for their contributions. Innovation doesn't always translate into better career prospects.
Add in the competitive pressures placed on their employers and it's clear materials handling professionals need to take the initiative to manage their careers. Skill marketability and versatility contribute to job security. The following questions can help guide your efforts:
- Is your resume current?
- If it hasn't been updated recently, do so.
- Is there a clear “line of sight” between your efforts or actions and career outcomes?
If irrelevant, unclear or inconsistent metrics are used to gauge or quantify your performance, you may be stuck in a demoralizing position, and be more vulnerable to corporate downsizing, as well.
How well connected are you to other professionals both inside and outside your company?
Other professionals face similar career challenges, but in different ways. The acquisition of social capital applicable to careers isn't confined to just the workplace—the golf course or softball diamond helps, too.
A career no longer is synonymous with a single position. By staying abreast of the latest industry developments, you'll give yourself the best opportunity to succeed.
