Market Trends: Automated storage and retrieval systems

A snaphot of the current AS/RS market

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 12/1/2007

Sales of fixed-aisle automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) have more than rebounded from the drop they suffered at the beginning of the decade. Sales of unit-load AS/RS have been particularly strong in recent years. While users are finding additional uses for AS/RS, the handling of finished goods remains their most popular application.

All statistics on this page are provided by the Fixed-Aisle AS/RS Working Group of Material Handling Industry of America and include sales data from member companies only. Working group membership has fluctuated somewhat over the last 10 years.

BENEFITS OF AN AS/RS

Space savings

An AS/RS allowed Organic Valley to build a facility 40% smaller than the conventional warehouse originally proposed.

Reduced manual handling

Grocer Stop & Shop installed a 77-aisle AS/RS and cut manual pallet moves in half.

Better inventory control

An AS/RS enables NTN Driveshaft to maintain strict first in/first out lot tracking.
