In celebration of 50 years of advancing standards, quality, safety and general fitness for steel storage rack systems, the members of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) will each display special signage in their booths at NA08.Additionally, as part of the festivities, the association is offering a complimentary download of “MH26.2 – Specification for the Design, Testing and Utilization of Welded Wire Rack Decking.” Approved and published in 2007, this revision of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved standard applies to uniformly loaded rack decking fabricated from welded-wire mesh for use in storage racks. Download it at: www.mhia.org/psc/PSC_Products_racks_TechnicalPapers.cfm.
RMI members represent the leading rack and component manufacturers that supply industrial rack and welded wire decking worldwide and to virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector. Products represented include industrial steel storage racks, welded wire rack decking and related structural systems.
Affiliated members work together to develop and provide voluntary standards for the design of industrial rack systems, and to formulate guidelines for the proper use, operation and maintenance of those systems.
Educating users on the safe configuration, application and maintenance of rack structures is a key directive of the association. Beyond providing educational materials and programs, RMI is sponsoring two educational sessions this week: “Rack Storage: The Importance of Standards and R-Mark Certification” and “Pallet Racks and Decking: Considerations for Selecting, Installing, Maintaining and Operating.”
RMI is accredited by ANSI as the developer of American product and safety standards for steel storage racks and welded wire decking. The group also administers R-Mark certifications—a process for manufacturers that is administered through a panel of independent registered professional engineers who evaluate and ascertain that both RMI members and non-members meet requirements and standards.
Further, RMI funds product testing and research and development programs that have resulted in many technical advances in the U.S. codes/standards community for rack and decking. RMI members sit on a number of code and fire safety bodies to advance developments in rack design and application. To support members’ global reach, the organization interfaces with sister associations both domestically and internationally and is a leading resource for the collection and dissemination of reliable rack industry statistics.
RMI is an affiliated trade association of the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). For more information, visit www.mhia.org/psc/psc_products_racks.cfm or call 704-676-1190.
