NA walks the walk of sustainability

With the special emphasis on environmentally friendly materials handling solutions at this year’s North American Material Handling Show and Conference, the show’s sponsor has taken particular care to minimize the environmental impact of the event itself.

“For the first time, the tote bags we hand out to help attendees carry all the literature they collect are made of recyclable material, and the bags may themselves be recycled at the end of their use,” says Tom Meinert, senior director of events for the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). The bags are also durable enough for use beyond the show floor, say for toting groceries home from the supermarket.

Recycling bins will be placed throughout the show floor for any paper materials attendees want to discard. MHIA is also providing recyclable name badge lanyards for the first time, and will recycle used badges at the end of the show.

“We made a conscientious effort this year to purchase premium give-away items, like lanyards and tote bags, that are recyclable,” Meinert says. “Some of the suppliers we’ve used in the past for those items also offered recycled and recyclable versions, and we specifically chose to purchase those this year.”

Additionally, the carpets used at NA08 will find new life after Thursday.

“All the carpet gets recycled in two ways,” explains Meinert. “It gets recycled first for other shows. If certain portions have too much wear, pieces that are still useable from the long runs of carpet are cut out and become rental carpets for use in booths at other events.” Worn carpets that have reached the end of their useful life then head to a recycler rather than a landfill.
